ECO WARRIORS FIRST ACTION PLAN

RAISING AWARENESS OF THE TEAM

  • School to decide a Name (done)
  • School Design a Logo Competition (done)
  • Organise a Notice Board (done)
  • Create an Environment Team Section on the Website (done)
  • Write an Eco Code (done)
  • Have a Stall at the School Fair (done)
  • Start an Environment Club (done)
  • ‘Eye Spy’ what’s been spotted in the School grounds for the notice board and website (done)

ENERGY

Action Team: Zoe Head, Camilla Hayes, Hannah Best, Sam Phillips

Aim!: To get the whole school to think about saving energy by turning lights off and not leaving computers/TV’s on standby

Short term Action!:

  • Design poster for each room
  • Raise awareness in Assembly
  • Act as Light monitors – switch off any unnecessary lights

Long term action!:

  • Look into installing an energy monitor

WATER

Action Team: Zoe Head, Camilla Hayes, Hannah Best

Aim: To get the whole school to think about not wasting water

Action!:

  • Design a Poster for the cloakrooms
  • Raise awareness in Assembly
  • Act as Water monitors – turn taps off if left running and report leaks to Tony/Alex
  • Look into the cost of buying a child safe water butt and speak to Tony/Alex about where it would be best to position a water butt(s)

WASTE

Action Team: Abby, India Porter, Connor Brown

Aim!: To get the whole school to think about recycling, reusing, cutting down on waste in lunch boxes, and not wasting paper

Short term Action!:

  • Raise Awareness in Assembly
  • We have a compost bin, think about where we could put it so that it isn’t in the way, and think about where and how we could collect people’s old apple cores, other fruit skins/cores from lunch boxes, tea bags from the staff room and paper towels from the cloakrooms to go in the compost bin.

Long term Action!:

  • Organise a toys/DVD’s etc Swap Shop Day
  • Organise a Waste Free Lunch Day
  • Collect things to make recycled Art
  • Recycle Christmas Cards and Mobiles
  • Buy recycled paper
  • Get a wormery

HEALTHY LIVING

Action Team: Josie, Camilla, Rosie Dart, Archie Phillips and Connor Brown

Aim: To raise awareness about the environmental benefits of eating local, seasonal foods

Short term Action:

  • Research where we could buy local foods for a special ‘local foods’ Hot Lunch eg local bacon, local juices/drinks, local seasonal fruit and local veg to make a soup. See if you find out the cost of these products too.

Long term Action:

  • Look into buying Freetrade food for Staff Room and Match teas

TRANSPORT

Long Term Action!:

  • Organise a Share a Lift to School Day
  • Investigate Bio Fuels for School buses

DESIGN A SENSORY/WILDLIFE GARDEN IN THE QUIET GARDEN

Action Team: Laurence, Archie Phillips, Abby, India Porter, Camille de Carvalho, Freddy, Camilla Hayes, Hannah Best

Aim: To create a garden which is rich in wildlife and a quiet place to sit

Action!:

  • Research which plants would be suitable, thinking about:
  • .Think about what other features we could put in which would be good for wildlife eg bird feeder/bird bath/insect homes
  • Do a rough sketch of the Garden of what’s already there and where we could put any new plants, bird feeders etc and maybe some seating
  • When finished, think about how you could present the design to Assembly

PLANTING FOR THE FIELD

Action Team: Rosie Dart, Archie Phillips, Connor Brown

Aim: To let a margin of grass grow around the field so that more wildlife is able to live there.

Short term Action!:

  • Think about what wildflower seeds/bulbs we could sow in the long grass to encourage butterflies etc
  • Think about how to let people know in Assembly why we are letting the grass grow longer around the edge of the field (and what we hope to plant there) so that it doesn’t get trampled on in lunch breaks etc

POND AREA

Long term Action:

  • Make bat and bird boxes, insect hotel
  • Bird Feeding Station
  • Bird Baths
  • Log Pile (done)
  • Metal Sheeting in a sunny spot
  • Plant Nectar Flowers
  • Look after Pond and maybe have duck island in middle
  • Build more child friendly pond dipping platforms

OTHER

  • Organise talks on wildlife and environmental issues
  • Organise an Environment Week
