The Dolphin community were delighted to welcome sculptor, Simon Hedger, to the school on Tuesday 1st July.
Simon travels the UK and the world sharing his skills and love of wood carving. His early work focused on historical and mythical figures, but is now more wide ranging. Based in Carmarthen, Simon was delighted to be commissioned by the Art Department to create a sculpture for Dolphin.
Using a chain saw Simon carved the sculpture in just four days. All the children were then involved in putting the finishing touches to the six foot tall structure by sanding it down and painting a vinegar based solution onto the areas which represent water.
The sculpture depicts two dolphins leaping out of the water and is a bench on which a number of children can sit at any one time. Children were thrilled to be allowed to carve their initials in the planks of wood which form the seat.
If all that were not enough, Simon also treated the children to a display and workshop of wood carving techniques which they all thoroughly enjoyed.
