A First and Last for Dolphin School

All nine and ten year olds in Year Five at Dolphin School in Hurst delighted audiences on the evenings of Thursday and Friday, 13th and 14th December, when they brought the musical ‘The Importance of Being a McGurgle’ to the school stage.

David Cooper, Head of Music and Resident Composer, wrote and directed the two hour musical extravaganza which was performed for the very first time in December. There were fourteen songs in all used to tell the comic tale of the McGurgle clan. The action takes place in a haunted castle and is in the style of an Agatha Christie mystery.

Although it is a first for the production, it is a last for retiring Head, Heather Brough. As an art teacher Heather has been involved in creating sets for countless Dolphin productions over the past 25 years and this ‘Baronial Castle’ will be her last.

Heather said, “I have such wonderful memories of Dolphin productions over the years. Performance is a special part of what is on offer here and I have always loved playing my part in bringing the shows to life. I certainly couldn’t have missed this last opportunity to be involved in making David’s vision for the set a reality.”

It is always exciting to anticipate the performance of children at Dolphin who so enjoy the drama challenges on offer, but especially so when the production is entirely new.

David has composed and directed a number of shows for Dolphin over the years including The Pied Piper, Aladdin and The Black Bird.
