Thirty children aged 9 and 10 in Year Five at Dolphin School in Hurst delighted audiences of friends and family on the evenings of Wednesday and Thursday 13^th and 14^th December at 7.30pm when they performed their end of term musical, Circular Arguments.

Circular Arguments is about the struggle for the planet earth to prove that it moves around the sun. The show is full of familiar tunes with new lyrics like Blue Moon, Catch a Falling Star, We’re So Dizzy, We Will Rock You, and Starry Starry Night as well as original music written and performed by past pupil and Cambridge music graduate, Geoffrey Lawson.

Circular Arguments also features famous astronomers, scientists and mathematicians from history such as Galileo, Newton and Archimedes.

The set and scenery are a mixture of high tech computer graphics and top quality molded polystyrene columns forming the Leaning Tower of Pisa which was produced by a professional film set designer, Dirk Budden.

A huge number of staff, pupils and parents have worked for weeks to support the production making costumes and props, painting scenery, and managing the complex sound and lighting effects.

Directors Janet Lawson (Science teacher) and Jami Castell (English teacher and amateur dramatics enthusiast) are delighted with the end result and the hard work and dedication of the children taking part.

Janet Lawson who wrote the script, said, “The idea began to evolve 14 years ago as a means of teaching the children about the planets and famous astronomers and this year it blossomed into a full blown musical! It is such a rewarding, if exhausting, process. The children have been fantastic.”
