REWARDS AND SANCTIONS

The happiness of the individual child is of vital importance to us and staff and children have worked together to establish policies and codes of behaviour for Dolphin School. This policy applies to all children at Dolphin including those in the EYFS.

DOLPHIN CODES OF BEHAVIOUR FOR A HAPPIER SCHOOL

Respect yourself and all others in the community.

Exercise self-control and take responsibility for your own actions.

Be thoughtful and considerate to the needs of others: they have the right to enjoy Dolphin too.

.Respect property – yours, other people’s and the environment.

Help the staff to make the learning rewarding for you and for them.

At Dolphin, staff encourage good behaviour in the following ways:

· By acting as good role models, by being responsible and self disciplined, courteous and caring to each other and to the children.

· By building a good working relationship with each other, the parents and the children and creating a safe, well ordered and happy environment where all may flourish.

· By recognising that the process towards self discipline is a gradual process that has to be taught and reinforced in a non threatening way.

· By ensuring that children understand what we expect from them in our environment and what they may expect of us.

· By insisting on courtesy and good manners and endeavouring to be fair and consistent.

· By discussing and reinforcing the Dolphin Codes of behaviour.

· By constantly praising good behaviour.

Tangible rewards for good behaviour vary according to age and the nature of the behaviour.

As well as positive verbal comments younger children receive stickers, stamps and smiley faces, as well as Golden Leaves for the Golden Tree in Reception. Particularly good work or behaviour may result in a visit to the Head, or a mention and a special sticker in the regular Pre Prep assembly. Privileges are given to the whole group for good behaviour.

Older children from Year Three upwards also receive stickers known as ‘strides’ which go towards a grand total for the House Cup. These ‘strides’ have a picture of a foot to reinforce the idea that we are all climbing up a mountain together to reach our goal.. They are given as a reward for good behaviour, good work, effort or any other praiseworthy activity. Particularly good behaviour, work or success is celebrated in school assemblies and may also result in a visit to the Head for a special award. All children are given targets towards which they can aspire to gain recognition and reward and Years Seven and Eight can gain extra privileges that are dependent on good behaviour.

The staff view the following as unacceptable behaviour:

· Threatening behaviour. The physical intention to hurt others including pushing and shoving.

· Name calling, deriding others, enjoying each other’s misfortune, excluding others.

· Belittling others, mocking them relentlessly. Picking on one easy target habitually, labelling.

· Trying to get others into trouble. Inciting bad behaviour in others.

· Stealing, hiding or defacing property. Using bad language. Not owning up or lying.

· Calling out, not listening to class instructions, butting in, monopolising.

· Answering back. Constant attention seeking. Manipulation of staff.

Discipline: Sanctions employed at Dolphin and their use

We aim to cultivate a safe environment where all can flourish - sanctions are a tool towards achieving this. They are not to be seen as “punishment” but helpful corrective measures. Codes of behaviour on trips, at matches and competitions, in the classroom, in the playground and throughout the school should be in line with school policy.

Senior Leadership Team must be aware of the use of Sanctions Five to Nine.

Low Level Teaching staff and care staff may use these sanctions.

Medium Level – Teaching Staff may use Sanctions Five to Nine, Care Co-ordinator or Deputy may use Sanctions Five and Seven. Senior management must be aware of use of Sanctions Four to Nine, and child’s name must go into the “Discipline” book (in Common Room) or the “Incident” book (in school office) if any of these measures are used with details of the incident and what has been done about it. Incident book monitored weekly by Care Coordinator and Head. Discipline book monitored weekly by SLT.

* Detention given and carried out by subject staff.

** “On report” is meant to correct poor behaviour or work and to encourage the child towards a better performance. Parents must support this action. The child takes a form to each member of staff after each lesson for a “report”. The form teacher takes it in at the end of each day and photocopies it. One copy stays at school, the other goes home for parents to sign and return. Initially “on report” means one week.
