MASQUERADING MYTH

One of these five characters does not feature in Greek mythology.   Identify the false one for a prize; and for a further prize name as many as you can from the rest.

A hero sowed the teeth of a dragon he had slain.   Up rose a band of warriors.   The hero threw a rock amidst them which set them quarrelling and fighting; five survived, who helped him build a new city.

Because he had cut down a sacred grove he was punished with dreadful hunger.   He ate constantly and insatiably everything he could – even, eventually, himself.

Clubbing a pair of snakes brought an unexpected change to this prophet: he became a woman and stayed a woman for seven years until one day he again came upon a pair of snakes …

Diving from a cliff into what he thought was a pearl-filled lake this unlucky boy had been deceived by a mirage and so fell to his death – or he would have died had not the gods taken pity and placed him in the sky as the constellation Urinator (the Diver).

Eternally condemned to make rope this poor rope-maker watches as a she-ass eternally eats his hard work.   What a life they have in Hades!

  Answer: D is not a Greek myth.  The clue was Urinator, which does mean 'diver', but is not a constellation.  A was Cadmus (not Jason); B Erysicthon;

C Teiresias; E Ocnus (not a well known character)

First correct answers received at virtually the same time: Toby P. and Thomas C. (Year 4); Harry (Year 8) also correctly identified all the true myths.  Millie (Year 3) adventurously explored Near Eastern mythology to find E - but it was in fact Greek.
