GUIDELINES FOR USING THE DOLPHIN SCHOOL COMPUTERS

ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY

We are proud of the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) Department at Dolphin School. We would like you to use the equipment to develop many different aspects of your education.

Please read these rules carefully.

GENERAL

* Children are not allowed to use any school computers unless supervised by a member of staff.

* Computers are provided for you to work on, which may include researching activities, but not games unless permitted by the supervising teacher.

* Children may not install any software on the computers without permission and supervision.

* The ICT equipment is an expensive resource used by everyone in the school. Everyone must play their part in keeping the equipment in good condition so that others can use it.

* No food or drink is allowed in the ICT suite or near any of the computers in the school.

* Please leave the ICT suite tidy by replacing headphones, pushing the chairs in and taking personal belongings with you.

NETWORK

* You will log in with the username ‘dolphins’ and the password ‘swim’. This is the only username that is accessible to Dolphin pupils.

* Always save your classroom work to the ‘classroom’ folders unless it is work that is personal to you or work outside of the classroom. You can save these files in your own personal folder under your year group folder within the ‘everyone’ drive.

* Try to ensure that you file all your documents in an organised way, so that you do not lose them. Your documents should all be saved in your designated Class Folder area on the ‘L’ drive. Do not save unnecessary files on the server as space is limited. If you lose a file, ask for help to look in the ‘orphan’ folder in your year group.

INTERNET

The Internet offers many resources to both students and teachers. We would like you to use the Internet for research sites that will add interest to your work in all subjects. However, the Internet can give access to undesirable information and pictures. We ensure that you are protected from such information in the following ways:

* A content filtering software is installed on the school network which is updated regularly – you will not have permission to access some websites.

Games must not be played online unless directed to do so by your teacher.

If you feel at all uncomfortable or upset by anything that you discover on the Internet you should report it to your teacher immediately.

* Furthermore if you are at all unsure about the nature of the Internet material you are accessing, you must ask your teacher for support before continuing.

Downloading of files is only ever allowed under supervision.

Advertising and commercial activities are also not allowed on the school computers.

You should never purchase anything on-line at school.

VIRUS PROTECTION

Our computers are protected against viruses.

All memory sticks and discs brought in to school must be checked by the virus scan before they can be used. See your teacher.

E-MAIL

* You will be provided with a dolphins@dolphinschool.com e-mail which you can access at the school. This is the only e-mail facility that you are allowed to use at school. The password will be the same for all pupils.

* This email facility is only used for educational purposes in lessons and to allow pupils to send and receive homework. For this, there needs to be a personal email address (pupil’s or parent’s) to be able to send and receive at home.

* Please note that your e-mail is not necessarily secure or private, although each email will be filed under the correct year group and should contain your year group and own name in the subject head; eg Year 8 John Smith. E-mails will be investigated if it is felt that there has been a misuse.

* Although you are only likely to receive an email from yourself at home, if you do receive something from someone you do not know, you should delete it or check it with a member of staff before opening it.

* You may not read anyone else’s e-mails without their consent.

* Your ICT lessons include advice about security, for example not revealing your personal details or others’ personal details, home addresses, photographs, personal videos or telephone numbers on the internet or via e-mail.

* Any sending of messages or images that are rude, vulgar, impolite, insulting or hurtful is strictly forbidden. If you receive any of the above it must be reported to a member of staff.
