WEEKLY CALENDAR OF EVENTS NO. 378

Monday 22 September– Sunday 28 September 2008

ISSUED Friday 19 September

ALL

May we please ask parents not to park in the staff car park.

If you have not yet taken a look at our website, www.dolphinschool.net we hope you will do so.   This site will become an important source of up to date information.   The username and password details can be obtained from the office.   The Weekly Update is accessible directly from the site and we hope that you can take the time each week to read it.   Paper copies are also available at Reception.

Please may we remind parents that the children should have all the necessary equipment for lessons in their pencil cases. The contents of these should include a fountain pen or other handwriting pen (not a biro), pencils, sharpener, rubber, colouring pencils and ruler.   A glue stick is useful and children in Years Seven and Eight should also have a scientific calculator

Please note that all visa arrangements need to be handled by a child’s parents or guardians. This will include notifying the school that a child’s visa may prevent them travelling with the school group. In this situation you must notify the school that it needs to apply to use the “List of Travellers’ Visa Waiver Scheme”.   Please note that parents of children with Non EU passports must ensure that their children can exit from and re-enter the UK. If not we must be informed by their parents so that we can apply for the above List of Travellers’ Waiver Form.

May we remind parents that once children pass out of the School grounds (through the gate at Meadow reception) with their parents they become their parents’ responsibility.   Whilst doing our best to ensure safe practice in the School car park, we cannot be responsible for children in that area.   Parents of younger children, that is Nursery and Reception classes whose children are delivered to them by the School staff, are responsible for them from then onwards.   Any subsequent play in the climbing frame area must be supervised by their parents.   The Skyscales is out of bounds before and after school.

To simplify the procedure for the late return of library books, children will now be given two reminders then the cost of the book will be added to the next bill.   We are keen to promote reading and so the simpler the procedure of dealing with late book returns the better.

Children are going to be reminded in assembly to keep their school bags as light in weight as possible. May we ask parents to help children to only select their books and equipment required for the current day.

As the weather gets colder all children should have a warm and waterproof coat in school.

If your child needs to take medicine during the school day please bring it to the school reception with your written permission and the dates and times it should be given.

May we remind everyone bringing children to school in the morning that they cannot be dropped off until 7.45am.   Before that time there are no staff available to be responsible for the children (unless part of a trip arrangement).

Please note that our new postcode is RG10 0FR.

Thank you to all parents who contributed to the PE kit sale.   We made £224 in total.   This will be used to buy some more equipment.

Opro Mouthguards are coming on 29th September.   We recommend mouthguards for Year 4 upwards when playing rugby, hockey and lacrosse.   Pupils will be bringing home a brochure about the Opro guards if you wish to use this service.   Please either complete the form online or return it to the school office with your cheque by Thursday 25th September.   Other mouthguards which you can fit at home can be bought in sports shops.

The English Department would like to draw your attention to two literary festivals on the horizon.   The Henley Literacy Festival runs from 19th-21st September.   Why not sign up for Patricia Elliott’s Creative Writing for Children workshop on Saturday 20th September at 12pm, aimed at 7-12 year olds.   Their website is www.henleyliteraryfestival.co.uk.

Also, the Cheltenham Literature Festival, which runs from 10th-19th October.   Check out their website www.cheltenhamfestivals.com.

The English department is wondering if there are any more photos of children reading in unusual places on holiday.   Only a few photos have been handed in so far.   Please can you hand any more in to your child’s English teacher by 19th September. Thank you!

CONGRATULATIONS:

To Cathy Thomas who has been voted on to the Wokingham District Council Early Years Forum Committee as representative for Independent Schools.

To Janet Lawson, our Senior Teacher and INCO, who has just been awarded an MA in a subject very close to Dolphin’s heart!   Her dissertation was primarily concerned with the gifted and talented child and we look forward to using her expertise in the classroom and beyond.
