WEEKLY CALENDAR OF EVENTS NO. 431

Monday 1 March – Sunday 7 March 2010

ISSUED Friday 26 February 2010

ALL

The English Department has decided to celebrate World Book Day (Thursday 4 March) by asking the children to design a white t-shirt with a favourite book character or an idea for a brand new book cover. Anything goes as long at it is inspired by books! A letter has been sent home with suggestions.

We now have Dolphin winter hats for sale at £9. These are knitted with a warm fleece lining and profits from the sales will go towards Sport Relief. Sample hats are available to view in the school Reception. The hats will be available for the children to buy at break times.

We are now collecting the Sainsbury Active Kids vouchers. If you have any to donate, please pop them in to the school Reception.

FunRaisers

There is a Hot Lunch on Friday 5 March kindly organized by Years 2 and 6. Please leave any cake donations in the hall on the day and if you are able to help with the lunch then please speak to the relevant class clippers. Thank you.

Please note that the door codes have changed. Please ask your child or a member of staff for the new numbers.

A copy of our revised guidelines for use of school ICT equipment is available for viewing on the website, together with an e-safety policy and advice for parents on children and the internet at home. A letter regarding this has gone home to parents with children in Years 5 – 8. Please return the reply slip to the office after half term.

May we remind parents that it is never safe to leave children or valuables on display in cars in the car park. The school car park is unfortunately, as are many other car parks, constantly being watched by thieves. The police and our security company are aware of this and do make spot checks. We also have periodic meetings with the crime prevention staff from the Berkshire Police Force. A car has been broken into this week. May we therefore please ask you to heed the notices in the school car park and our security reminders.

Children are going to be reminded in assembly to keep their school bags as light in weight at possible. May we ask parents to help children to only select their books and equipment required for the current day.

Please do not park in the disabled space in the school car park unless you hold a disabled badge. It is very difficult for drivers with disabled family members to park greater distance from the school entrance.

Will parents please note that Years 3,4,5,6 and 8 should be in the school hall, and Years 2 and 7 in their classrooms, at 8am ready for registration, having previously been to their cloakrooms. Reception and Year 1 should be in their classrooms by 8.45am. Some children are arriving consistently late for school.

Cotswold Camping are offering a 10% discount on production of a Dolphin School compliment slip with the number D2043. If you would like one, please ask the school office.

We break up this term on Thursday 1 April at normal finishing time, this is not a half day.

INFORMATION & REMINDERS

(Much of the information in this section is either statutory or is passed on to you at the request of our insurers/other advisors)

BAD WEATHER. Our normal procedure in bad weather is to open at the usual time and shut at 3.30pm, cancelling clubs and afterschool care to enable everyone to get home early. If you are concerned in the morning, please do not ring the school. Radio Berkshire (tune into 104.4FM) will be broadcasting a list of schools which are closed and we will make sure they know. We will also publish the plan for the day on “today’s notice” on our website as soon as possible. If your children are unable to attend school, or will be late for school because of the weather, please only ring us after 9am to keep the telephone lines free in case any of the teaching staff need to ring us.

Parents Evenings and trip meetings. We understand that obtaining child care for every meeting can sometimes be difficult, however, we would like to remind you that should you bring your child to these meetings, they must remain with you at all times as they are your responsibility.

Please remember that once children pass out of the school grounds (through the gate at the Meadow Reception) with their parents they become their parents’ responsibility. Whilst doing out best to ensure safe practice in the school car park, we cannot be responsible for the children in that area. Parents of younger children, that is Nursery and Reception classes, whose children are delivered to them by the school staff are responsible for them from then onwards. Any subsequent play in the climbing frame area must be supervised by parents. The sky scales are out of bounds before and after school.

RECEPTION

Parents are warmly invited to visit Reception on Friday 5 March in the afternoon from 14.00- 15.00.

YEAR 4

On 18 May there will be a theatre trip to see The Tempest at the Unicorn Theatre in London. It is an afternoon performance so we will probably return by 18.30, but this will be confirmed nearer the time.

YEAR 5

Trip to Silchester/Reading MuseumThursday 4 March, 08.00 – 15.30. Please make sure the children are dressed warmly and have walking shoes as the trip does include an outside walk as well as the museum visit. The children will need a packed lunch in a disposable carrier.

On 19 March there will be a theatre trip to see a dark operetta My Mother Told Me Not to Stare at the Unicorn Theatre in London. We will depart at 07.45 and return by the end of school at 15.30.

16 March Ironbridge Trip meeting. It is essential that at least one parent attends this meeting to ensure informed consent.

YEARS 5, 6 & 7

A letter about Dolphin Scholarships was given to the children on 20 January. If your child intends to apply for a Scholarship they should give Veronica Gibbs a letter to that effect by the end of this term.

On Tuesday we will be going over to the Elvian School in Reading to listen to the poet and performer Andrew Fusek Peters. If your child would like to buy a book, s/he should bring some money – his books are priced at £5. We will leave school at 13.30 and return by 16.45.

Don’t forget the weekend rehearsal on 13 and 14 March. The actors will be required from 10.30 until 15.30 on Saturday 13. The actors and musicians will be required from 10.00 until 15.00 on Sunday 14.
