WEEKLY CALENDAR OF EVENTS NO. 428

Monday 1 February – Sunday 6 February 2010

ISSUED Friday 29 January 2010

ALL

Thank you very much to all the Nursery parents and children who donated money for the Thames Valley Adventure Playground on Wednesday 20 January. The children came dressed up as traditional story characters. We raised £62.81 on the day.

The Sports Activity Week will again be running at the end of the summer term, 26 – 30 July. A sign-up sheet and details are available in Reception.

Sunday 31 January is National Bug Busting Day. The children have been given a letter to take home about this. Please don’t forget how important it is to check the whole family’s hair for head lice on this day. Thank you for your support with this difficult problem.

The English department would like to make you aware of a poetry event happening this Saturday 30 January. Our poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and Roger Mc Gough will join 18 other prestigious poets to raise money for the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. Poetry Live for Haiti will be held at central hall Westminster from 14.30 Tickets cost £10. We urge to go if you are free.

The English department would also like to remind you about the meeting titled Chasing Children’s Fiction on Thursday 4 February at 15.30 in the Maths rooms where Judy will be discussing the range of new fiction available for tots to teens Come and be informed as to how to encourage your child’s enjoyment in reading.

Peter Dixon’s visit on Monday 8 February

The poet and educationalist Peter Dixon will be spending the day with us on 8 February and working with all the children at some point. Parents are invited to attend the session that their child will be at. All sessions will take place in the main school hall as follows:

10.30 – 11.15 - Nursery & Reception

11.30 – 12.30 - Years 1, 2 & 3

13.30 – 14.30 - Years 4 & 5

14.30 – 15.30 - Years 6, 7 & 8

After school there will be a book fair and book signing.

The English Department would like to draw your attention to a public lecture entitled Twisting Their Words, Why do Some Children Struggle to Read? On Tuesday 9 February at 20.00. The lecture will be given by Dr. Patricia Riddell in the Palmer Building on the White knights Campus at the University of Reading. No tickets are required. Visit www.reading.ac.uk/publiclectureseries for more information.

Cotswold Camping are offering a 10% discount on production of a Dolphin School compliment slip with the number D2043. If you would like one, please ask the school office.

Please remember that your child will need a warm coat for outside play. Hats and gloves are important when the weather is especially cold.

We break up this term on Thursday 1 April at normal finishing time, this is not a half day.

FUNRAISERS

Funraisers would like to thank everyone involved in the Bring and Buy charity toy sale on Monday including the many helpers for their tireless work and all those who were so generous with their donations.

A fantastic amount of £713.30 was raised from the sale alone! This will be added to the funds of over £60 collected in the Red box in the Hall and paid over to the Haiti disaster relief fund. A special thank you to Micah Richmond for suggesting such a worthwhile idea and to all the Yr 7s for their enthusiasm and hard work.

The next Funraisers meeting is on Thursday 11 February. 19.00 in the History Room.

INFORMATION & REMINDERS

(Much of the information in this section is either statutory or is passed on to you at the request of our insurers/other advisors)

Wokingham Borough Council is currently consulting on the next local transport plan (LTP3). If you would like to assist them please complete the survey which can be found on the WBC website http://www.wokingham.gov.uk/localtransportplan.

Dolphin continues to be targeted by break-ins to our outer buildings. Please do not leave any valuables in outer locker rooms and huts, or anywhere in the school. Police and our Security Company are carrying out random checks. We would like to make it clear to parents that pupils’ possessions are not insured whilst they are on the school premises (they are insured whilst they are on trips). Your household insurer will be able to advise you whether your policy covers loss of items whilst at school and, if not, whether such cover could be made available on your existing policy. Our Insurance Brokers, HSBC, can provide you with an annual policy if you wish. If you would like further details, please contact Linda Charlesworth.

If your child needs to take medicine during the school day, please bring it to the school reception with your written
permission and the dates and times it should be given. Dolphin staff will do their very best to ensure that medicines you bring in to school are administered to pupils. Because of the nature of school life we cannot make an absolute guarantee.

YEAR 4

Parents Evening on Monday 1 February, 18.30 – 20.30. Please arrive at the time indicated on your reply slip.

A reminder from the PE Department that the children must have a gumshield in school every day.

YEAR 5

16 March Ironbridge Trip meeting. It is essential that at least one parent attends this meeting to ensure informed consent.

YEARS 5, 6 & 7

A letter about Dolphin Scholarships was given to the children on 20 January. If your child intends to apply for a Scholarship they should give Veronica Gibbs a letter to that effect by the end of this term.

YEARS 5-8

If there are any more pupils wishing to go on a walking trip, I need a short letter from you as soon as possible explaining why you would like to go. This letter needs to be counter-signed by a parent/guardian. Adam Warner
