ACTORS FROM SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE PERFORM HAMLET TO CALAIS REFUGEES (click title to go to the article)

Matt Romain, class of '98 was part of a group of actors from Shakespeare's Globe who performed Hamlet to a group of Calais refugees. Matt commented:

"There's been a lot of debate about this (ie criticism of it) and I think debate is good - both about the wider role of the arts in society, and about the needs of refugees. And the more we talk about the latter, the better.

But the worry that is hidden within the rhetoric of its detractors is a subconscious dehumanising of the refugees, writing them off as merely a collection of basic animal needs - creatures that want food and shelter and nothing more. Rather than people like us, people with active imaginations and creative minds who might suffer from boredom, who might benefit from stimulation, who might understand the gist of a story and appreciate its telling, who might miss having a slice of culture in their lives. Among whom there might be young playwrights and budding actors and keen readers or else people who'd just like a couple of hours' escapism, a break from their appalling norm. People who want to live as well as just survive.

There's an odd mutual exclusivism associated with offering anything other than food and clothing, which is not only false but hugely restrictive. And it undermines each attempt to recognise, to remind that these people are still people.

Before we went to Calais, I felt these arguments were patronising. Having been there I know them to be wrong."
