Great excitement surrounded the Y3 trip to Battle Abbey with freshly painted Saxon and Norman shields at the ready for battle. In the year 1066, the armies of King Harold and William the Conqueror clashed here at the Battle of Hastings. We stood on the very spot where this decisive struggle was fought, and England’s future decided to re-enact the scene complete with juggling balls as arrows.  We walked the battlefield trail to encounter carved wooden sculptures depicting Norman and Saxon soldiers and compared our shields with theirs. The inspirational Abbey buildings were a fantastic backdrop for the children to sketch and capture forever.
