Lake District Trip
Back
Year 6 had an unforgettable adventure in the Lake District, packed with challenge, teamwork, and plenty of fun. The trip began in Whinlatter Forest, where pupils were introduced to the skills of orienteering. Working in small groups, they learned how to read maps, and navigate through the forest, building confidence and problem-solving skills along the way.
One of the highlights was the planned hike up Helvellyn. The group set off with determination, but the weather had other ideas. With gusts reaching 38mph and heavy rain setting in, a sensible and safe decision was made to turn back halfway at Red Tarn. Although they didn’t reach the summit, the experience taught valuable lessons about resilience, risk assessment, and respecting the power of nature. Once safely back down, the group visited the stunning Aira Force waterfalls, where they enjoyed exploring the area and took part in some geocaching activities.
The following day offered two exciting adventures. Half of the group set off on a hike up Catbells, successfully reaching the summit and enjoying breathtaking views across the surrounding landscape. Their efforts were rewarded with a well-deserved ice cream at the end. Meanwhile, the other half took part in an exhilarating ghyll scrambling session down Stoneycroft Ghyll. Pupils worked their way along the stream, taking on a variety of challenges including feet-first slides and jumps, head-first slides, and even some belly flopping into the water. There were smiles and laughter all around—everyone agreed it was a fantastic experience! After lunch, the groups swapped activities so that everyone could enjoy both adventures.
On the final day, the children travelled to Keswick town centre to take part in a competitive treasure trail. Working in teams, they followed clues around the town, finishing on the edge of the beautiful Derwent Water. It was the perfect way to round off a memorable trip.
Overall, the Year 6 Lake District residential was a tremendous success. Pupils showed great enthusiasm, teamwork, and resilience throughout, and returned home with wonderful memories and a real sense of achievement.
