Year 5 Winchester Science Museum Trip Summary
Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic day at the Winchester Science Museum this week, which linked beautifully to our current topic on space and the solar system. The children began by exploring the interactive galleries, where they had the freedom to investigate hands‑on exhibits, test ideas, and discuss their discoveries with one another. Their curiosity and eagerness to engage with each activity set a wonderful tone for the day.
They then took part in the Destination Space workshop, which deepened their understanding of light and its importance in studying space. Students investigated the properties of visible and infrared light by measuring the infrared levels of different coloured cards, discovering how colours absorb or reflect heat differently. They also worked in teams to solve infrared laser mazes using mirrors and light splitters; each successful maze lit up a small infrared detector. This challenge encouraged collaboration, problem‑solving, and perseverance.
To round off the visit, the class enjoyed a planetarium show that transported them through the night sky. They explored familiar constellations and learned new facts about the planets in our solar system, building on the learning we have been doing in class. The children remained enthusiastic throughout the whole experience and represented the school brilliantly. We hope the trip has further ignited their curiosity about space and the wider world of science.
